Abstract
The study examined the impacts of Korean Admissions Officer(AO) system on three areas of college preparation behaviors, which are related to 1)the college entrance exam(Korean SAT) or GPA, 2)the preparation for application materials such as portfolios and essays, and 3) extracurricular activities. Utilizing the data from a university in Seoul, the study compared two groups of students(those who had gotten admission through the AO track and those who had gotten admission otherwise ) with regard to their strategic behaviors for college admission and conceptions on the AO system. Based on this comparison the possibility that the needs for extra preparation for college admission might be was examined and discussed. More directly the study analyzed the difference between the two groups in participation and spending for these extra preparations. Analysis results indicate that the two groups were not different in the amount of spending for college preparation but differ in the areas of investment. The AO group tended to invest in the extracurricular activities, while the other group in various general preparations including Korean SAT or GPA. Since the two groups showed different college preparation(investment) behaviors, it is hard to conclude that the AO system would causes more spending for college preparations. If AO system is adopted by more colleges and universities in the future and students begin to perceive the system as a major track of college admission, however, the needs for extra preparations would be felt by more students and private spending could increase. On the other hand, more thought needs to be given to the possibility that extra preparation behaviors are not necessary a evil. The behaviors might do educationally desirable functions that would help the students explore their career path in an authentic sense, rather than might cause extra financial burden.
