dc.description.abstract | Post-stroke dysphagia is frequent following acute stroke. It is estimated that between 1/3 to 1/2 of patients show dysphagia in the acute stroke phase. Dysphagia is independently associated with short-term and long-term outcome of stroke. The incidence of aspiration and silent aspiration is high in the stroke survivors. Dysphagia and aspiration are high risk factors of aspiration pneumonia in the stroke patients. Many post-stroke dysphagia resolves rapidly in the early stage of the disease. Small portion (about 10%) of post-stroke dysphagia patients continues to show dysphagia in the chronic stage. The severity of dysphagia also decreases in time. | - |
