Abstract
The purpose of this study is to assess the effects of a short water-based exercise program on senior fitness and quality of life index to promote health of the elderly. The sixteen adults(M±SD: 66.38±5.39 years old) were devided into therapeutic water-based exercise (TWE) group, and water-baesed balance exercise (WBB) group. WBE group received WBE, and WBB group recived WBB for 4days. Physical therapist who have experiences over 5 years conducted senior fiteness test (SFT) ay baseline, 5days, and quality of life index (QoL) at 5 days only. The study results of twenty-two subjects are below. First, there were significant improvements on 30 second chair stand test (t=-2.362, p<.05), Arm curl test (t=-6.205, p<.05), 2 minute step test (t=-5.148, p<.05), Back scratch test(t=-2.548, p<.05) in the TWE goup. On the other hand, there were significant improvements on 30 second chair stand test (t=-2.885, p<.05), 8 feet up-and-go test (t=2.418, p<.05) in the WBB group. Second, there was significant difference on Role-Emotional (t=-2.885, p<.05) of QoL between two groups. The present results indicate that short water-based exercised program generalized to a better senior fitness and QoL index on the eldery. Also there is a need to conduct a long-term and large group study to assess the effects of a water-based exercise program for senior fitness and QoL to promote health of the elderly.
