- Abstract
- This paper examines the effect of import competition from China on plant growth in Korean manufacturing, using micro data during 1990-2003. We find plant growth rates were lower in industries which faced more severe import competition from China. Within industry, however, the negative effect was more pronounced for capital intensive plants. We do not find any robust evidence, either, that imports from China promoted reallocation from labor-to skill-intensive plants. These results are in contrast with the findings by Bernard, Jensen, and Schott(2002) that low-wage competition promoted resource reallocation from labor- to capital- or skill-intensive plants in the U.S.
