dc.description.abstract | The purpose of this study is to provide the basic data when clinician assess the patient who have balance disability by knowing effects of ankle strength and range of motion on static balance capacity of the elderly. The thirty subjects who voluntarily participated in this study were over 65 years old elderly, and this study was progressed by cross-sectional study design. Physical therapist who have many experiences conducted dominant ankle muscle strength, dominant ankle range of motion, and static balance capacity by assessing displacement of center of pressure (COP) on medio-lateral (X-axis), and anterio-posterior direction (Y-axis) in the elderly. After final screening test, the study results of twenty-two subjects are below. First, there was no significant correlation between ankle dorsiflexor, plantar flexor, evertor, invertor and COPX, COPY displacement on eyes opened condition(p>.05). Also, there was no significant correlation between range of motion of ankle dorsiflexor, plantar flexor, evertor, invertor and COPX, COPY displacement on eyes opened condition (p>.05). Second, there was significant negative correlation between ankle dorsiflexor (r=-.438, p<0.05), invertor (r=-.434, p<.05) and COPY displacement on eyes closed condition, it means that increased strength of ankle dorsiflexor and invertor leads to decreased COPY displacement. However, there was no significant correlation between range of motion of ankle dorsiflexor, plantar flexor, evertor, invertor and COPX, COPY displacement on eyes closed condition (p>.05). Through the results of this study, we found that there is significant negative correlation between ankle dorsiflexor, invertor strength and COPY displacement on eyes closed condition, it means that increased strength of ankle dorsiflexor and invertor leads to decreased COPY displacement. Therefore, the ankle strength especially dorsiflexor, invertor are important part for static balance capacity on eyes closed condition. In conclusion, strengthening exercise on ankle muscles strength would be an effective intervention for the over 65 years elderly who have balance disability. | - |
