China related writings published in the Critical Review of History were as much diverse in contents as their quantity. Diverse attempts have been made ranging from those that tried to boldly point out problems in the existing learned circles of Chinese histories, in particular, the learned circles of modern/contemporary Chinese histories to those that tried to explore the possibility to describe histories encompassing the East Asia. Diverse observations, analyses and assessments of China that have been changing day by day since the reform and opening up have been also attempted. An issue in which the writers of the Critical Review of History intensively showed interest was the ideological trend of China, in particular, that of intellectuals after the reform and opening up. In particular, they paid attention to so-called ‘the New Left’ that took a critical standpoint against ‘the Free Marketeer’ and the stream of cultural conservatism. This indicates how the writers of the Critical Review of History looked the process of the construction of the ‘Chinese Style Socialism’ and what they wanted to know from the process. Looking at China that has been rapidly growing into a great power, they tried to find out the sociocultural logic of the growth into a great power and a logic to critically think about China that has been pursuing rapid economic growth based on models of Neo-Liberalism.-
