Police work is a task in which bias does not supercede fact, a noble endeavor that should be carried out by men and women to immune extraneous influences and circumstances. These are the ideal images of police and the work they perform. In reality, police are bound by the same cognitive principles as the citizens they serve. The current study will attempt to test the differential suspicion theory (Smith, Makarious, & Alpert, 2006) in the context of police stops outside of the traffic setting. Instead, pedestrian stops will be analyzed utilizing variables derived from the 2006 New York City (NYC) Stop, Question, and Frisk dataset. These data were originally collected by New York Police Department officers and record information gathered as a result of stop question and frisk encounters during 2006. The data included over 500,000 (n = 506,491) individual pedestrian stops by New York Police Department (NYPD) officers in all five boroughs of New York City. Data was amassed through information recorded by NYPD officers after citizen stops during the duration of the study. A set of logistic regression analyses were conducted (Model 1, 2, and 3). Detailed findings and limitations of the current study were discussed.-
