The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of body mass index (BMI), peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak) levels, insulin and homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) in people with spinal cord injury (SCI). A total of 32 subjects (20 male subjects:34.70±7.91 years, 12 female subjects: 35.75±2.95 years) with SCI participated in this cross-sectional study. We measured VO2peak, BMI, total cholesterol (TC), insulin, HOMA-IR, metabolic syndrome risk factors including fasting glucose, triglyceride (TG), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP). Results showed that 1) after adjustment for age and sex, VO2peak was significantly correlated with BMI and HDL-C (r=.432, p<.05). 2) BMI also was significantly correlated with VO2peak, HDL-C, insulin, and HOMA-IR. 3) Subjects with high BMI had significantly increased insulin and HOMA-IR than those with low BMI after adjusted age and sex. 4) Subjects with high fitness had significantly increased BMI, insulin, and HOMA-IR than those with low fitness after adjusted age and sex. In conclusion, this study showed that VO2peak (cardiorespiratory fitness) and BMI are strongly associated with insulin and HOMA-IR in people with SCI.-
