dc.description.abstract | This study investigates non-directional locative constructions in Korean and Chinese and argues that meaning differences between the constructions of the two languages come from telicity. This paper provides the evidence from activity verbs (atelic) and accomplishment verbs (telic), i.e., the constructions of ‘[N-ey]/[N-eyse]’ (Korean) and ‘Zai(在)-location+V' and ‘V-Zai(在)-location’ (Chinese) respectively. Points in this study are as follows: First, ‘[N-ey]’ is constructed as ‘V-Zai(在)-location' in Chinese, and ‘[N-eyse]’ as ‘Zai(在)-location+V.' This suggests that telicity influences the locative phrase position in Chinese, the case marker in Korean. Second, the constructions of ‘[N-eyse]’ in Korean and ‘Zai(在)-location+V' in Chinese are construed differently depending on what verbs they are attached to. Third, the meaning of the constructions of ‘[N-ey]’ in Korean and ‘V-Zai(在)-location’ in Chinese varies depending on what verbs they are attached to. When attached to a telic verb, both constructions signify the perfective tense, and erroneous when attached to an atelic verb. With the above mentioned points, this study explains the reasons why locative constructions in Korean and Chinese are construed differently from native speakers’ intuition. | - |
