dc.description.abstract | The purpose of this study was to investigate the physiological response to exercise by using hand-bike exercise equipment in people with spinal cord injury (SCI). Four male (30.25±3.30 yrs) participated in this study. Participants were asked to exercise with two different exercise equipments (Hand-bike and Motomed) with 30 min rest in between. Physiological responses were observed each 30 second of exercise and therefore subjects were asked to exercise for five to ten minutes and their heart rate (HR), oxygen consumption (VO2) and rate of perceived exertion (RPE) were monitored. SPSS/PC + version 21.0 statistical software was used for the study. The results are as follows. HR and VO2 increased up to 147.50±41.31 bpm and 16.86±6.20 ml/min/kg during hand-bike exercise. During motomed exercise, HR and VO2 increased up to 151.75±43.57 bpm and 15.64±5.41 ml/min/kg respectively. Total exercise duration was increased more in hand-bike exercise than motomed exercise. In conclusion, physiological responses to exercise using hand-bike exercise equipment is effective in people with SCI. Moreover, generally this exercise equipment result in physiological stress which is similar to moderate intensity level exercise in people with SCI. | - |
