This study was aimed at investigating the changes in the space program and the response to the spatial requirement to optimize the changed space program, which are the essential elements to revitalize art museums currently dying out in Korea through innovation and changes. With famous international museums as examples, which have been expanded and renovated since 2000, how they have responded spatially to the changes, and what programs have been operated accordingly were analyzed. The results are as follow. First, many of contemporary art galleries have been expanding in order to add new programs. There are also a number of cases where a cultural complex is planned naturally and its long-term master plan is being promoted during the new construction process. Second, the space program encourages visitors to revisit by continually planning new exhibitions in the form of the special exhibition, and the rest and sales functions such as museum shops, restaurants and cafeteria were also operated in conjunction with various exhibitions and lecture programs along with changes in operating hours. In addition, various event programs such as a dinner party, a cocktail reception, a wedding ceremony and a corporate meeting, where all aforementioned three programs were combined were being operated. As discussed above, it was found that contemporary art museums are being transformed to more active spaces with their expansion and the operation of new programs by emphasizing their functions of social education institutions serving the local community development and of social communications. The results of this study are expected to contribute considerably to both operational and spatial aspects in revitalizing art museums, which are dying out in Korea, as a true cultural space in society.-
