- Abstract
- A vehicle rollover refers to a type of vehicle crash in which a vehicle rotates at least 90 degrees on the basis of its driving direction. Rollovers in South Korea are found to have a fatality rate 3.5 times higher than front collisions.
This study analyzed the movements of a vehicle using PC-Crash and a passenger's movements using MADYMO in order to analyze a passenger's movements in the event of a vehicle rollover. Results of a test conducted under the dolly test conditions of FMVSS 208 after placing dummies on the driver's seat and the front passenger seat were compared with simulation. Regarding movements of the vehicle, data acquired by a sensor installed on the outside of the vehicle were compared with the results of simulation. As for the passenger's movements, a video footage of the vehicle interior were compared with the results of simulation. PC-Crash and MADYMO use different coordinate systems. Owing to this issue, only two-dimensional passenger movements in a car crash can be analyzed. This study investigated methods for simulating the three-dimensional movements of a vehicle by linking the two programs. Results showed that when one free joint element was applied to , and for translation motion and , and were applied in sequence to three revolute joint elements for rotational motion, as methods for linking the dynamic behavior of PC-Crash to MADYMO, the movements of the two vehicles corresponded exactly with each other and the passenger's movements also showed very similar forms.
