The symbolism of clothes has been handed down in the tradition and culture. Even today, ceremonial dress has the historicity, expressing the authority and tradition. Pursuing the practicality and functionality with the periodic changes, embellishment of the ceremonial dress was reduced or came to have a special meaning only. Today, it may be seen mainly from a suit for ceremonial events. Besides, baldric may be seen from dress for traditional ceremonial or royal events. In particular, it remains itself from symbolic ceremonial dress including military uniforms and other splendidly decorated uniforms for ceremonial events like a coronation, protocol of a royal family, military parade and a graduation of the military academy. Baldric appeared from the 17 century's men's wear and originally it was a sash on the shoulders in the military uniform to carry a sword or a bugle. As a wide sash fastened from the right shoulder through under the armpit for the decorative and the practical, it was used together with accessories including a long sword, feathered hat and sash ribbons. After the 17th century, it appeared mainly from military uniforms under a process during which they changed and then disappeared from general dress but survived in ceremonial dress for a royal family, monarch and the military. This study pays attention to baldric for Korean Empire royal events in nations that have a royal family at present and expects applications considering its origin since it is used now as a multi-purposed sash. It aims at exploring the decorative meaning of baldric which prevailed in certain period of the history of costume and disappeared from general dress after that period but continued its tradition from ceremonial dress and it is expected to apply to contemporary fashion. Research ranges from the 17th century when it appeared to the Baroque period it prevailed in various modes and examines in the connection with fashion-related materials and periodic social aspects. As for research methodologies, it examines decorative and social meanings of dress through realistic portraits and pictures considering periodic characteristics.-
