Abstract
Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a reactive oxygen species produced via aerobic metabolism in organisms and is regulated by both, enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant defense mechanisms. In this study, the effect of H2O2 on green fluorescent protein-transfected HEK293 cell behavior was optically and electrically characterized using a transparent indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode-based cell chip. The cells cultured without H2O2 adhered to the ITO electrode surface and proliferated, causing an increase in the impedance magnitude from 10 to 100 kHz. When H2O2 reached a concentration of > 5 mM, the impedance reduced with a decrease in the number of the cells at the ITO electrode. However, H2O2 at <5 mM resulted in an increase in both, impedance value and number of cells at the ITO electrode.
