86세대, 균열인가? 허상(虛像)인가?: 86세대의 정치적 태도 변화에 대한 경험적 분석

Abstract

86세대는 여전히 ‘진보성’으로 상징되는 동질적인 ‘코호트 효과(cohort effect)를 발휘하고 있는가? 아니면 시간이 흐를수록 특유의 코호트 효과 는 퇴색되고 다른 세대와 다르지 않은 생애주기 효과(life cycle effect) 를 보여주고 있는가? 이 논문은 86세대의 절반 이상이 50대에 접어든 2017년 대선 시점에서 이들의 이념적 진보성이 여전히 강력한 동질성을 발휘하고 있는지 분석한다. 이를 통해 지금까지 많은 세대연구에서 강조 되어 온 ‘86세대’의 진보적 성향은 허상이었는지, 아니면 ‘86세대’ 내에서 서로 다른 코호트로 분화하였는지를 경험적으로 분석한다. 이를 위해 86 세대 코호트 전체를 그 이전 세대 및 이후 세대와 이념성향, 보수후보 투표, 보수정당 일체감을 비교하였고, 86세대를 민주화 투쟁세대(1961-65 년생)와 민주화 성취세대(1966-70년생)로 구분하여 같은 분석을 실시하였다. 경험적 분석 결과 86세대 코호트는 다른 코호트와 일정한 차이를 보여주고 있지만, 그 차이는 86세대 전체의 특성이 아니라 86세대의 두 하위 코호트(민주화 투쟁세대와 민주화 성취세대) 중 민주화 성취세대의 특성에서 비롯된 것이었다. 이 논문은 86세대가 실제로는 정치적 태도에 있어서는 상당히 이질적이며, 새로운 세대구분의 필요성을 제시하고 있다 는 점에서 그 함의가 있다.

Does ‘86 generation’ still have ‘homogeneous’ cohort effect which is characterized by ideological progressivity? Or their ideological homogeneity have cracked and diverged over time? This article investigate whether the homogeneity of ‘86 generation’ have persisted from 1992 to 2017 presidential elections. For investigating detailed change within 86 generation, we classified two sub-cohorts by year of birth and conducted the empirical analysis using pooled cross-sectional data. Empirical results showed that ‘86 generation’ have not homogeneous cohort effect. However, the difference between sub-cohorts not only was quite apparent and but also have increased continuously over time. These findings showed that 86 generation is likely to have variety on their political ideology, voting behavior and party identification. These results implied that 86 generations are quite heterogeneous to distinguish them as homogeneous cohort, so there is need to suggest new standard of cohort division.
