Travel essay by Japanese people during the Japanese occupation of Korea depicts their experience and impression about Korea very vividly. Therefore, travelogues of Korea written by Japanese people –especially the elite men such as bureaucrats, military personnel, business people, researchers etc.- during this period have been recognized as an effective medium to understand how Japanese colonizers perceived and accepted Korean people and culture. Japanese artists also had visited Korea very often and recorded their experiences around the same period. This paper aims to clarify a Japanese painter’s perception of Korea by examining and analyzing his travel essay. For that purpose, I will examine a traveling book, “My Art Journey” by Ishii Hakutei(1882-1958), a Western- style painter who was one of the most influential figures in modern art in Japan. Focusing on the contents about Mt. Geumgang, Gyeongseong(=Seoul), and Kisaeng, I will figure out how the painter perceived Korean scenery, traditional customs, and Korean people. I hope this article lays a foundation for an in-depth understanding and discussion on the art and work of Ishii Hakutei and his views of Korea(n).-
