Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to examine one of the recent tourism policies in Japan, infrastructure tourism, and to provide theoretical and practical implications which can contribute to tourism researchers and policy makers. Design, data, and methodology – This study is a case study in which online materials, such as governmental reports, the portal site of infrastructure tourism, and academic papers, were collected and analyzed. Result – This study shows concepts, background and current situation, main policy tools, representative site cases, future directions of infrastructure in Japan. The results theoretically imply that infrastructure tourism is understood as an interesting phenomenon associated with postmodern tourism, the concept of authenticity, and visitor economy. Practically, strategies of tourism contents, tourism preparedness, and tourism marketing are suggested. Conclusions – This study is meaningful because analyzing infrastructure tourism gives an opportunity to understand the changing nature of contemporary tourism as well as offering useful implications for tourism industry of Korea.
