Abstract

This study examines the usage patterns and discourse-pragmatic functions of discourse markers ‘zhege’ and ‘nage’ collocating with other discourse markers. The main textual functions that appear when ‘zhege’ and ‘nage’ collocate with other discourse markers include introducing topics, changing topics, continuing topics, and fillers. They also performs interactive functions such as transiting turns and maintaining turns. The functional distribution that appears in the discourse markers ‘zhege’ and ‘nage’ shows remarkably asymmetrical phenomena. Specifically, when the discourse marker ‘zhege’ collocates with other discourse markers, most of them perform continuing topics. On the other hand, when the discourse marker ‘nage’ collocates with other discourse markers, they often perform fillers, introducing topics, and changing topics. The use of discourse markers ‘zhege’ and ‘nage’ in naturally occurring conversations is not fixed in terms of the speaker’s proximity and the speaker’s distance, but discourse-pragmatic characteristics such as the speaker’s cognitive situation and interaction between participants play an important role.
