This study analyzes lengthened reactive tokens occurring in Chinese conversations between native speakers and speakers whose native language is Korean. This study uses both qualitative methods based in conversation analysis and corpus-based quantitative methods to show that lengthened reactive tokens function as a means of displaying the speaker’s stance toward his/her interlocutor. In this case, the Korean speaker uses lengthened reactive tokens to mark what the Chinese native speaker had just said as highly significant or noteworthy. In this way, the Korean speaker constructs his/her identity as a non-native speaker. Both native and non-native speakers orient toward each other’s identities as they emerge in an interaction, and each uses the other party’s identity to determine future conversational acts. These findings suggest that the Chinese native speaker and the Korean speaker collaborate on creating and managing their identities within conversational interaction.-
