Abstract

This study shows how discourse-and-grammar has developed as a branch of functional linguistics within the tradition of linguistics, paying particular attention to the development of discourse-based functional approaches to grammar in the United States. Using discourse-and-grammar analysis, this paper surveys recent studies of Chinese that incorporate an interactional perspective in describing and understanding various grammatical phenomena. This study concludes with several promising directions for future research that may deepen our understanding of how language is shaped by its function as a tool of human communication.
