Authors:
For the elderly, the residential environment is a physical and mental living area formed by interaction with people along with the location of the house, and directly or indirectly affects values and behavior. Therefore, improving the residential environment so that the elderly can live in the community is related to the welfare service system as well as the quality of life of the elderly.
Therefore, this study was investigated using AARP's resident-centered old-age urban environment evaluation tool to identify what the elderly consider to be important factors of physical old-age-friendly living environment and to compare and study the differences between the elderly in Korea and U.S.
As a result, it was found that the important factors influenced among the factors of the physical elderly-friendly living environment for the elderly had a significant influence on the factors of "sufficiency of public places to exercise", "resident at appropriate housing cost" and "audio-visual crosswalk".
Therefore, important factor that should be improved among the elderly-friendly living environments so that the elderly can live in the community even in their old age is to stabilize housing costs and secure accessible public places to promote and maintain health.

Authors: Brossoie, Nancy; Hwang, Eunju; Song, Kimin; Jeong, Jin Wook; Young-Woo, Kim
Abstract: A major task ahead for South Korea is to create age-friendly communities and environments that can support older residents' health, well-being, and quality of life. To that end, international partnerships have emerged to share information, assess need, and develop response strategies. In this study, the transferability of a US-developed age-friendly community resident survey, based on the WHO framework, was tested in two South Korean cities by comparing results to the same survey conducted in a US city. Descriptive, relational, and predictive analyses revealed the survey items were a better fit for the US city than the South Korean cities. Limited response variances collected in the Korean cities challenged the comparison of data between the Korean sites. Thus, a cultural lens was used to explain response patterns that reflect their understanding of social norms including avoiding disagreement and conflict in order to maintain social equilibrium and five cultural dimensions found in Western and Eastern societies (Individualism vs. collectivism, universalism vs. particularism, low vs. high power distance, low vs. high context, and inner vs, outer control). Recommendations for future assessments in South Korea include shifting focus away from the individual to the individual's social network and community to improve understanding of need.

Authors: Ra, Moonsoo; Boo, Younggun; Jeong, Jae Min; Batts-Etseg, Jargalsaikhan; Jeong, Jinha; Lee, Woong
Abstract: Investigations have been made to explore the applicability of an off-the-shelf deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) architecture, residual neural network (ResNet), to the classification of the crystal structure of materials using electron diffraction patterns without prior knowledge of the material systems under consideration. The dataset required for training and validating the ResNet architectures was obtained by the computer simulation of the selected area electron diffraction (SAD) in transmission electron microscopy. Acceleration voltages, zone axes, and camera lengths were used as variables and crystal information format (CIF) files obtained from open crystal data repositories were used as inputs. The cubic crystal system was chosen as a model system and five space groups of 213, 221, 225, 227, and 229 in the cubic system were selected for the test and validation, based on the distinguishability of the SAD patterns. The simulated diffraction patterns were regrouped and labeled from the viewpoint of computer vision, i.e., the way how the neural network recognizes the two-dimensional representation of three-dimensional lattice structure of crystals, for improved training and classification efficiency. Comparison of the various ResNet architectures with varying number of layers demonstrated that the ResNet101 architecture could classify the space groups with the validation accuracy of 92.607%.
