The Interplay of Probabilistic Expectation and Semantic Compatibility in Korean Evidential Processing

Title: The Interplay of Probabilistic Expectation and Semantic Compatibility in Korean Evidential Processing
Authors: Yun, Hongoak; Nam, Yunju
Abstract: This study examines how readers process evidential dependencies in Korean, a language where marking the source of information is morphologically encoded but often optional. Using a combination of offline and online measures, we investigated the extent to which readers adhere to evidential consistency during incremental processing. Our findings indicate that while readers generate probabilistic expectations based on early cues, these expectations are distinctly modulated by semantic compatibility. The observation that evidential mismatches are frequently accommodated suggests that evidentiality in Korean functions as a soft constraint to prevent communication breakdown. We conclude that evidential processing is not driven by rigid grammatical algorithms but is a flexible mechanism that balances probabilistic expectation with semantic congruence.

Authors: 김건; 남윤주
Abstract: This study explores the relationship between information-theoretic metrics from large language models and neural activity during natural sentence reading. Analyzing EEG data, we found that surprisal was associated with reduced lower-beta power during initial processing, reflecting updates to an existing predictive model. Furthermore, entropy correlated with increased broadband neural power, primarily over left-hemisphere regions. In contrast, entropy reduction was associated with increased high-beta and gamma power, linked to information integration. These findings demonstrate that different information-theoretic metrics map onto distinct neural signatures of predictive processing and cognitive load. While the results provide strong evidence for these links, the fixation-locked analysis method suggests a need for future research to capture the continuous, dynamic time-course of meaning integration.

Variations in answering negative polar questions in Korean: An experimental study

Title: Variations in answering negative polar questions in Korean: An experimental study
Authors: Kim, Jong-Bok; Kim, Jungsoo; Nam, Yunju
Abstract: With respect to how to answer polar questions, languages are taken to employ either the polarity-based system (e.g., English) or the truth-based one (e.g., Japanese). This dichotomy, however, is challenged when speakers make use of different negation forms and contextual information, particularly when answering negative polar questions (NPQs). This study investigates how two negation forms (short-form and long-form) and contextual bias affect the way speakers answer NPQs in Korean. The acceptability judgment experiment we conducted in this study shows that contextual bias, interacting with the negation form, often overrides the two-way distinction of answering systems. The results imply that a proper description of the variations in the Korean answering system to NPQs requires tight interactions among various grammatical components, including the discourse structure, rather than a syntax-based account that resorts solely to the syntactic structures of negation forms involved.

This study investigates the processing patterns of morphemic, syntactic, and semantic information in sentences using the adverbial case marker ‘-(eu)ro’ and cognitive verbs. The study presented a total of 336 sentences to 27 native Korean speakers and 27 advanced learners, with variations in case markers, word order, and noun phrase animacy. Participants processed these sentences via a self-paced reading task and were evaluated for comprehension and semantic role assignment tendencies using a Likert 5-point scale survey. The findings revealed that both native speakers and learners exhibited a processing hierarchy of ‘semantics < syntax < morphology,’ prioritizing morphological information, specifically the case markers. This suggests that the restrictive nature of adverbial phrases compels learners to adopt sentence processing strategies that enhance sensitivity to case markers. However, a more detailed analysis indicated that learners still tended to depend on the animacy of noun phrases, reflecting that their proficiency level is not comparable to that of native speakers. The study highlights that variations in noun phrase animacy are crucial for adjusting the difficulty of highly constrained adverbial sentences. Consequently, a multifaceted approach is essential for a comprehensive understanding of how learners acquire adverbial sentences involving cognitive verbs.
