소리 세대(sonic generation): 엔텔레키, 테크놀로지, 감성의 공동체

Abstract

본 연구는 소리적, 음악적 차원이 세대 담론에 있어서 차지할 수 있는 이론적 잠재력을 검토하고, 그것이 적용될 수 있는 실제 사례들을 살펴본다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 칼 만하임(Karl Mannheim, 1893-1947)의 이론을 중심으로 한 기존의 세대 이론에서 충분히 다루어지지 못했거나, 간과되어 온 세대의 소리적, 음악적 차원에 주목한다. 특히 본 논문은 (1) 만하임의 엔텔레키 개념과 기술의 역사적 변화가 맺고 있는 관계성에 주목하고, (2) 소리나 음악과 같은 청각적 차원이 다양한 세대 현상을 이해하는 중요한 단면을 드러냄을 주장한다. 이를 통해 본 논문은 기존의 세대 이론이 소리 연구를 통해 세대의 청각적 측면을 고찰할 수 있음을 드러내고, 세대 단위가 소리 연구의 흥미로운 토픽이 될 수 있음을 다양한 사례를 통해 제시한다.

This paper examines the theoretical potentials of auditory dimension in the preexisting theory of generations, suggesting the new concepts such as sonic generation, technology as entelechy, and generation as community of shared feelings. In the field of generation theory, Karl Mannheim (1893-1947) provides the influential theoretical frame which is still used as a fundamental basis for various discourses on generation. This paper pays close attention to the vacancy of sonic and musical dimension in those generation-related discourses since after Mannheim’s theory. In particular, this paper (1) deals with the relationship between entelechy in Mannheim’s theory and technological changes which give rise to the changes of techniques of listening, and (2) argues that various auditory dimensions reveal the important aspects of generation-related phenomenon. Ultimately, this paper suggests that the viewpoint from sound studies further expands the scope of generation theory.
