| dc.description.abstract | This study examines urban spatial changes of Cheongju and Uiju which were provincial capital cities and how to change Korean traditional buildings to Japanese buildings during the Japanese colonial period. After the establishment of the Japanese Resident-General in 1905, Japan tried to reform the Korean local government system. The construction of the railway running from Busan to Shinuiju (New Uiju) was completed in 1905. This railway system was a trigger to change the Korean local government system. Former Chungbuk and Pyeongbuk provincial governments are located inland and far from the railway stations. For economic reasons, these two provincial governments had to be relocated. So Chungbuk provincial office moved from Chungju to Cheongju and Pyeongbuk provincial office moved from Yeongbyun to Uiju that was near the borderline between China and Korea. Japan had a plan to expand its power to China, so Japan needed a strategic administrative hub to do it. Since the early Japanese colonial period, the urban space of the two cities was getting to change so fast. Cheongju faced urban changes as pulling down the city wall and constructing straighten and grid roads. the Uiju city had lots of military facilities in the city because of its borderline ** All Korean local government buildings were switched to Japanese administrative buildings with a Korean-Japanese mixed-style. Chungbuk provincial government used the building built in the 18th century but they remodeled and extended the building. Pyeongbuk provincial government used the building Korean local government's and Japan also remodeled the building and built new annexes with Japanese style. Those buildings were connected with outer aisles. The southern gate of the Uiju city wall turned into a Japanese industrial exhibition facility. | - |
