유영모의 사상 원류로서의 소설 ｢귀남과 수남｣

Abstract

이 논문은 유영모의 소설 ｢귀남과 수남｣을 소개, 분석하고 이것이 기존 전도소설과 어떻게 다른지, 그리고 이것이 유영모의 사상과 어떤 연관성을 갖는지에 대해 쓴 것이다. 이 소설은 1917년 1월에 매일신보 단편소설부분 현상공모에 당선된 작품으로, 아들의 죽음을 두 번이나 겪는 부부의 이야기이다. 이를 통하여 유영모는 미신에 대한 새로운 정의를 내리고 참 기도 참 믿음으로 나아가야 한다는 것을 제시하였다. 이런 주제는 기복신앙적인 면모를 보이는 기존의 전도소설 구조를 뛰어넘는다는 점에서 기독교문학사상 특별한 의의가 있다. 유영모는 평생 죽음과 종교를 연결하여 설명하였고, ‘나이’가 아니라 ‘산 날 수’를 세었으며, 주기도문을 개인 version으로 제시하며 하나님 나라를 강조하며 살았다. 이런 그의 사상의 시작이 유영모가 20대에 쓴 이 소설 ｢귀남과 수남｣에 있다는 사실을 이 논문을 통해 제시하였다. 그런 면에서 이 소설은 유영모 개인의 사상을 살펴볼 때나, 기독교문학을 살펴볼 때나 매우 주목할 작품이다.

This paper introduces and analyzes Yoo Young-mo"s novel "Gwi-nam and Su-nam. I also wrote about how this novel differs from the existing evangelism novels, and how it relates to Yoo Young-mo"s thoughts. This novel was won in the contest for the short story part of Maeil Shinbo in January 1917, and is the story of a couple who suffered the death of their son twice. Through this, Yoo Young-mo suggested that a new definition of superstition should be made and that true prayers should be made. Such a theme is of special significance in the history of Christian literature in that it goes beyond the existing evangelical novel structure, which shows a ups and downsistic aspect. Yoo Young-mo explained the connection between death and religion throughout his life, counting the “number of days alive” rather than “age”, and presenting the Lord"s Prayer as a personal version, emphasizing the kingdom of God. This paper suggests that the beginning of his ideas lies in the novel "Gwi-nam and Su-nam" written by Yoo Young-mo in his 20s. In that respect, this novel is a very remarkable work, whether it is looking at Yoo Young-mo"s personal thoughts or Christian literature.
