감정과 의식: 신경과학과 인공지능 시대의 문학

Abstract

이 논문은 최근 사회적 쟁점으로 부각되고 있는 신경과학과 인공지능의 발전이 문학의 기능과 미래에 어떤 시사점을 갖는지에 대한 시론적 분석을 시도한다. 이를 위해 전통적으로 문학에서 중요하게 다루어진 핵심 개념, 감정과 의식에 대해 현대 인공지능 연구와 신경과학 연구가 현재 시점에 도달한 결론과 그 결론의 철학적 함의를 고찰한다. 이 과정에서 감정과 의식의 구성적 성격이 강조된다. 그리고 감정과 의식의 구성적 성격이 인간의 감정을 흉내 내려는 감정 로봇이 갖는 위험성과 인간 의식의 독특함이 문학의 미래에 대해 갖는 시사점에 대해 논의한다. 마지막으로 감정과 의식에 대한 과학적 연구와 문학적 탐색이 서로 보완적일 가능성에 대해 탐색한다.

I shall try a preliminary analysis of what philosophical implications current neuroscience and artificial intelligence research have as regards the functions and future of literature. I examine the current consensus of neuroscience and artificial intelligence research about the nature of emotion and consciousness, which are two crucial concepts of literature. The ‘constructive’ nature of emotion and consciousness will be emphasized. Based on this constructive understanding of human emotion and consciousness, I discuss the danger of so-called emotional robots which recognize human emotional expression and mimic them, and the future of literature which is relevant to the uniqueness of human consciousness. Finally I suggest the possibility of complementarity between scientific research and literary exploration.
