Single-Person Household Needs with a Focus on Interior Planning

Abstract

There is a constant growing tendency on single households worldwide including Japan, Europe etc. Single households are no longer an unsettled passing through household type before transforming into multi-person households. Single households are now one of normal household types, thus further attention to housing planning is required for them to have more stable life. This study identified interior planning considerations for single households with a focus on housing lifestyles, preferences and needs.The result suggests that respondents’ overall satisfaction level of the interior space of single households were low because the current housings of the single households were constructed in a form of studio or one-room types without much consideration for their lifestyle. The result of this study is expected to be utilized as a preliminary data in responding to new needs of Korean housing market which has faced a physical and psychological turning point. For future studies, a customized interior planning will be systematically developed for supporting single households’ needs on housing with detailed interviews.
