Abstract
This paper proposes an optimal design of fluid dynamic bearings (FDBs) applied to a propulsor of an Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV) to improve static and dynamic performances. The FDBs in the propulsor is to support radial and axial load of the rotating part of the UUV by using sea water as lubricant. The load capacity and friction torque are determined by solving the Reynolds equation. And the stiffness and damping coefficients are determined by solving the perturbed equations of the Eeynolds equation. Optimization problem was formulated by introducing the multi-objective function of radial and axial load, and the constraint equations of stiffness and damping coefficients. Eleven major design variables of the FDBs were chosen for this optimization problem. Finally, this research proposed the optimal design of the FDBs with high load capacity for the UV propulsor.
