Abstract
Vibration analysis of a rotating blade composed of functionally graded material (FGM) in conjunction with the modified rule of mixtures (MROM) is studied in this paper. Two examples of FGM, Al/SiC and, Ni/Al2O3 whose values of stress to strain transfer ratio are known are considered. The effective values of Young’s modulus for the FGM blade is computed using the MROM while those of Poisson’s ratio and density is computed using the linear rule of mixtures (ROM). In verifying the accuracy of the proposed structure model, the natural frequencies obtained by the proposed model are compared with those by experimental data set of a reference literature. The effects of the volume fraction of the constituents on the modal characteristics of the FGM blade are investigated through numerical analysis. Whereas the linear ROM based property estimates lead to highly erroneous results, predictions using the MROM are found to be in close agreement with the experiments for both FGM systems.
