말러 vs. 빈 모더니즘

Abstract

이 논문은 말러의 음악적 특이성을 음악 양식사와 작품과 이와 연관된 다양한 프로그램의 내부적 논리로만 설명하려던 그간의 방식을 확장하여 사회, 문화와의 관계 안에서 살펴보려는 시도이다. 말러의 음악적 특징을 세기말 빈의 정치, 사회, 문화적 문맥 안에서 일어난 언어비평의 관점에서 재조명하여 빈의 모순된 가치에 대항하는 다른 예술가들의 입장과 말러의 입장이 왜 다른지를 설명하였다. 이에 따라 말러 음악의 특징을 전통을 완전히 부정하는 것이 아니라 전통적 기반 위에서 모순을 표현하려고 한 점, 세기말 사회의 진리와 현실의 불일치에서 오는 가치전도를 일차적 파라미터인 선율이나 화성 등이 아니고 이차적 파라미터인 음조로 표현하려고 한 점, 그리고 다양한 음악적 장치를 통해 아이러니 등으로 나타내는 점을 그의 교향곡 7번 1악장을 통하여 설명하였다.

This paper is an attempt to understand the characteristic features in Mahler’s music by focusing attention to social and cultural aspects in his works, as an extension to the common methodology that has been employed by examining the internal logic concerning the musical style and the related program to his works. Herein, I tried to explain why Mahler had a different view in contrast to other contemporary artists by analyzing the characteristics of his music in the aspect of the critique of the limits of language in the contexts of politics, society, and culture in la fin de siècle Vienna. To this end, the 1st movement of Symphony No. 7 was analyzed, which revealed his efforts to express 1) the value contradiction while keeping the most of the traditional foundation, 2) the value inversion caused by the inconsistencies between the truth and the reality of the life in fin de siècle Vienna by focusing on the second parameter, tone, rather than on the first parameter, melody or harmony, etc. and 3) irony via diverse musical manipulation.
