dc.description.abstractSolid isotropic material with penalization (SIMP) method is employed for structural topology optimization for the column of a micro milling machine. To obtain an optimized topology, elastic strain energy and natural frequency are selected as a measure of static and dynamic stiffness, respectively. Optimal topologies based on several combinations of weighting factors, Pareto solutions are obtained using topology optimization based on the SIMP method. For efficient searching solutions, normalizing scheme is used for calculating sensitivity numbers for a multi-objective function. From the results of topology optimization, it can be found that the topology optimization based on the SIMP method is efficient for searching a solution of multi-objective function problem. This method can be easily extended to multi-objective function problems for various machine tools due to simplicity of the method.-
