한국 프로야구의 구단 승률에 대한 분석

Abstract

본 연구는 2002년∼2012년 기간에 걸쳐 9개 프로야구 구단의 자료를 사용하여 고정효과 패널회귀모형에다 고정효과벡터분해를 병행하여 시변변수뿐만 아니라 시간불변변수가 승률에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 분석의 대상인 승률은 0과 1사이의 값을 취하므로 이를 로그오즈(log-odds)로 변환하여 음의 무한대에서 양의 무한대 사이의 값을 취할 수 있도록 하여 종속변수로 사용한다. 최초모형에서는 공격력, 수비력, 작전 스타일과 수행능력, 감독의 지도력, 선수층 두께와 선수구성 특성, 구단에 대한 대중의 관심, 선수의 연봉 수준과 불균형 및 분포, 구단에 대한 모기업의 재정지원 유형, 연고지, 홈구장의 특성을 반영하는 변수들을 설명변수로 고려하였으며, AIC 기준을 적용하여 최적모형을 판별하였다. 공격력, 수비력, 작전 스타일과 수행능력 측면에서는 도루성공과 희생번트가 승률에 도움이 된다는 전통적인 견해는 대체적으로 기각되는 반면 출루율, 장타율, 이닝당 출루허용이 중요하다는 세이버메트릭스의 주장이 수용되는 것으로 나타났다. 야수의 수비력보다는 투수의 능력이 승률에 훨씬 중요하며, 선수의 연봉 불균형과 승률의 관계에서는 투수의 경우 토너먼트 이론과 응집성 이론이 모두 지지되지 않는 반면 타자의 경우 응집성 이론이 지지되는 것으로 나타났다. 투수층이 두터울수록 승률에 양의 영향을 미치는 반면 선수 연차는 유의하지 않았다. FA 효과는 없는 것으로 나타났다.

We investigate at the team level the effects on the percentage of wins (to the total number of matches) of team's offense power, defense power, style and execution capability of strategy, leadership of the head coach, composition and characteristics of players, size of the average audience, distribution of players' salaries, type of funding for operation and management, hometown, and physical size of the home ballpark. Using the unbalanced panel data covering all 9 professional baseball teams from 2002 to 2012, we construct a fixed-effect panel data regression model and concurrently apply fixed effects vector decomposition to accommodate both time-varying and time-invariant variables in the set of determinants. We arrive at the best model based on the AIC criterion. Long hit and on-base ratios are found to affect team’s winning percentage positively, while WHIP (Walks plus Hits divided by Innings Pitched) affects negatively. Defense ratio measuring fielders’ defense power is found to be statistically insignificant. For offensive power, defensive power, and style and execution capability of strategy, sabermetricians’ assertions seem to prevail while traditional views seem to falter. The relationship between the tenure of the head coach and team’s winning percentage is U-shaped. Players’ average years of experience are found to be insignificant. In the composition of players, only the proportion of pitchers is found to be significant, impacting team’s winning percentage positively. The average number of spectators is found to have positive effect. We measure salary dispersion by HHI index and found that pitchers’ salary dispersion is insignificant, supporting neither tournament theory nor cohesiveness theory. On the other hand, batter’s salary dispersion impacts team’s winning percentage negatively, supporting cohesiveness theory. FA effects are found to be statistically insignificant.
