Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate what socio-cultural value and belief about visual arts are learned and internalized by Korean children through analyzing children’s visual memories on their art class. Author’s previous studies have explored the same research problem in different ways since, although many efforts to develop school art class much better, many students still have difficulties to participate their art making practices in school actively. Moreover, it has been also observed many Korean elementary school students gives up their interest in art in their early years. Therefore, in this study, it is attempted to explore what makes children lose their interest in and passion on art. For this study, 10 elementary school students were asked to draw their memories on art class and after completing their drawing, they were also asked to explain their drawing. Collected drawings were analyzed using qualitative analyzing methods developed by Kim(2009) instead of quantitative analyzing method. From this analysis, the five themes were found related to problems of Korean elementary art class: (1) Distorted art teachers’ role in art class, (2) Children’s limited understanding art as an individual work, (3) Children’s understanding art as drawing or painting, (4) School arts are conducted only in classroom, and (5) Chatting and sleeping can be available in art classroom. These findings show us what changes art educators have to make for their future art lesson.
