洪敬謨의 行人 의식과 중국 인식

Abstract

중국은 우리가 국경을 맞대고 지내온 유일한 나라로, 두 나라의 역사는 언제나 불가분의 함수관계를 지닌다. 우리에게 있어 중국은 더할 나위 없이 가깝고 친숙한 문화를 지닌 우호적인 이웃이지만, 동시에 매우 거대한 덩치를 지닌 위압적인 강자이기도 하다. 중국과의 관계 양상이 우리의 안위와 직결되는 것은 고금에 변하지 않는 사실이다. 역사상 중국을 어떻게 이해하고 인식하는가 하는 것이 우리의 현안이 되지 않았던 적이 없다. 하지만 중국은 꽤나 크고 복합적이며 장구하여 쉽게 파악되지 않는다. 이 글은 홍경모(1774～1851)의 두 차례 연행 관련 詩文을 텍스트로 삼아, 그 가운데 드러난 중국 인식의 양상과 의의를 검토한 것이다. 홍경모는 외교 사신의 가장 중요한 임무로, 이웃나라의 정치와 풍속을 살피고 이를 기록하는 것이라고 보아 이를 적극적으로 실천하였다. 또 그는 과학적인 지식을 토대로 중국을 대상화하였고 대국적인 견지에서 세계의 형세를 조망하였다. 그러한 인식들이 그의 시문에 소상하게 나타난다. 그의 사행 자세와 중국 인식은 오늘날에도 여전히 유효하다. 대국적 관점에서 전체 구도를 파악하고 상대국과의 객관적 거리를 유지하려는 노력, 사행자 본연의 책임을 가다듬는 자세, 그 나라의 정세를 살펴 실상을 파악하여 이를 기록하는 정신은 오늘날에도 모범으로 삼을 만하다. 거대하고 위압적인 이웃 나라들에 대한 지적 거리와 조망의 높이를 확보하는 것은 특히 절실하게 요구된다.

China is the only country sharing the border with Korea and both countries have been keeping the inseparable correlation in the history. China was the friendly country with the extremely close and familiar culture to Korea, but at the same time, was the dominant power with the very great territory. It is the unchanging truth in the history that the relationship with China is directly linked to the security of Korea. How to understand and recognize China has been always the outstanding issue in Korea in the history. However, Chine is very big and complicated and has long history so that it is not easily understood. This paper investigated the awareness on China and meaning of China observed in the poetry and prose written by Hong Gyeongmo(1774～1851) during his journey twice to China as the text. Hong Gyeongmo thought the most critical mission as the envoy was to look around and record the politics and customs in the neighboring countries and was very active in implementing such missions. Furthermore, he objectified China on the basis of scientific knowledge and foresaw the status of the world with the long-range view. Such awareness was observed in detail in his poetry and prose. His attitude as the envoy and awareness on China are still effective. His effort to identify the overall structure with the long-range view and keep the objective relationship with other countries, his attitude to fulfill the responsibility as the envoy and spirit to look around the politics in other countries and identify and record the status are exemplary even today. In particular, it is urgently required to secure the intellectual distance to great and dominant neighboring countries and secure the position to look around them.
