Abstract
Borderland situations in the Ferghana Valley in Central Asia have brought about lots of inconveniences, and furthermore serious conflict and confrontation among residents of the border region. Trilateral border disputes among Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan have provided all this region with socio-economic instability and have became a structural cause of permanent security fragility in the Ferghana. This paper aims to explain backgrounds and the present state of border disputes up to recently, and to analyze the causes of protracted border delimitation. The sequence of this work is as follows: to explain the situation of border demarcation in early Soviet era, focusing on Moscow’s policy and the position of natives of the Ferghana; to describe the border conflict situations around several exclaves(or enclaves) located in the Ferghana which have been the epicenters in the tripartite border conflicts; to analyze why border delimitation process has been protracted for a long time; to propose a constructive and residents-centered way of solving border disputes in the Ferghana.
