Abstract
Effective product concept design depends on sharing and reusing product semantics in a huge amount of information. Although the world wide web has grown to be the largest distributed repository of information ever created, it is increasingly difficult to find required information through existing search and browse methods. So, many researchers and practitioners suggest that the solution to that problem lies in the invention of the machine-understandable semantics for some or all of the product related information on the world wide web. This paper proposes an ontological framework to build product information model and its application for product concept design environments, as well as explores the extend to which emerging semantic web technologies can be exploited to both represent product information about product concept development. The ontology was applied to include Description Logics that provide both product information modeling and reasoning mechanism to facilitate the decision support in concept selection. The model was implemented by Protege, an ontology development tool, and demonstrated through the digital TV domain.
