Earlier indoor localization system studies were based on received signal strength indication (RSSI) between the reference node and the mobile node. But an RSSI-based indoor localization system detects huge differences depending on the measurement environment. Specifically, IEEE 802.15.4 (sensor network) networks typically operate in a 2.4 GHz ISM band, which is used by popular IEEE 802.11 (Wireless LAN) networks as well. An overlap between the channels used by IEEE 802.15.4 and IEEE 802.11 networks may adversely impact the operation of IEEE 802.15.4 since it is a low power protocol with a low channel width compared to the transmitted power levels and channel width used by IEEE 802.11. In this paper, pre-processing is proposed to improve the problem with RSSI-based indoor localization systems. Pre-processing is a new method for optimal channel selection in terms of the smallest distance deviation prior to creating an indoor localization system. The distance error in the mobile node was reduced by approximately 12% using pre-processing for an indoor localization system, which was verified experimentally.-
