Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of children's learning and development of visual vocabularies through individual artistic experience. This study is a qualitative case study to analyze a child(Doyoung)'s pictures and daily artistic experiences who was considered as "cannot draw" in adults' view. we analyzed closely his pictures and interviews, and interviews with his teacher to examine the characteristics of his artistic experiences in and out of school and teacher's assessment on Doyong's drawing ability. The result of analyzing his artistic experience including his pictures and interactions with others related to art-making shows that although his artistic development has been underestimated by adults, Doyoung's visual vocabularies in a specific area such as action related to baseball are various and creative comparing with peer, and he was so interested in expressing action to two-dimensional plane. Main factor affecting his learning of visual vocabularies for depicting figure's movements and actions is mass media(TV animation) not school art class, and characteristics of main character's appearance were reflected in Doyoung's expression intactly. His pictures ware not "refined well-drawn" picture in adult's view, but Doyoung was contend to his own pictures and very proud of them, and enjoyed drawing. These results imply that individual child has a different artistic experience so he/she can develop a different set of visual vocabularies related to their artistic interest. This study suggests that not only the curriculums of school but various themes related to mass media and visual culture as artistic experiences affecting to children's art expression need to be provided to children to broaden their view of art and let them perceive drawing an amusing activity.
