수요의 가격 탄력성과 판매 수입 간 관계에 대한 분석

Abstract

수요의 가격탄력성과 판매수입 간 관계는 여러 수준의 경제학 교과서에서 공통적으로 다루고 있는 기본적인 내용이다. 본 연구는 여러 가지 방식으로 계산되는 탄력성과 판매수입 사이의 관계를 조사함으로써 우리에게 친숙한 양자 간 관계에 대해 보다 심도 있는 분석을 제공한다. 분석 결과에 따르면 중점을 이용한 호탄력성을 제외하면 탄력성과 판매수입 간 관계에 예외적인 상황이 항상 존재할 수 있다. 이는 구체적인 수치가 들어가는 사례나 문항을 작성할 때 그러한 예외적인 상황이 발생하지 않도록 유의해야 함을 시사한다. 아울러 본 연구는 수요의 가격탄력성과 판매수입 간 관계의 함의나 효용성에 일정 정도 한계가 있음을 지적한다.

This paper conducts an in-depth analysis on the relation between the price elasticity of demand and total revenue. According to the analysis, there exist anomalous cases in which the familiar relation between the two may not hold except when we adopt the arc elasticity around the midpoint. This implies that more caution should be taken when we construct numerical examples or problems on the relation between the two. This paper also indicates that there is some limitation in the practical value of the relation.
