dc.description.abstract | This paper examines an aspectual role of postverbal locatives headed by a preposition zai. In the postverbal position, zai-locatives go through preposition incorporation. The NP object of zai is realized as NP complement, and zai appears as the second element of a compound verb V-zai. This work analyzes Modern Mandarin corpus, focusing on spoken style data which include V-zai le pattern and shows that the postverbal zai-locatives must delimit an event type expressed by a given sentence. I will show that not only the postverbal zai-locatives which specify the goal of motion event, but also those denoting the stative location of resulting state lexicalized by verbs of positioning and appearing must delimit a given event. The reason why in Modern Mandarin, the postverbal position must host locatives delimiting an event is because NPs occuring in the postverbal position is defined as an object, i. e. an argument of verb. Typologically, situation delimiters tend to be realized as arguments or complements. For this reason, in Chinese, locatives without delimiting function tend to be realized as prepositional phrases and generally appear in the preverbal position; whereas, the postverbal position is associated with event delimiting locatives and this type of locatives surface as NP, following compound verbs, V-zai. | - |
