The Korean cinema between 1998 and 2007 is closely related to the situation and changes in Korean society of this period. The IMF crisis of the 1997, which drew Korean society into an unprecedented financial crisis, brought Koran society a new understanding that money and capital value are top priorities to survive. The financial crisis began to make Korean’s traditional social value and that of religion unstable and then the unstable believes both on society and culture also began to be reflected in the films of this period. Some of the films focus on the problem of human communication or human desires; some films pay attention to the human beings who are against God as going through desperate situations facing their everyday life. In addition, during this period, there appeared other films which dealt with the problem of the division of Korea. These films focused not merely on the tragedy of the division between South Korea and North Korea. More importantly, they emphasized the unification and identity between the two different country in terms of social structure, and focused on revealing the virtual subjects which had kept maintaining the state of division. The essay examines the influence of the social, political, and economic changes in South Korea concentrating on the Korean films of this period and its representation of the changes in particular.-
