| dc.description.abstract | A study was conducted to demonstrate fracture modeling of rectangular hollow section steel braces. Rectangular hollow sections (RHSs) are used because of good section properties and ease of construction. The study developed a refined beam model for finite element models of buildings. The study found that braced frames has sufficient lateral stiffness to inhibit large deformation under small to moderate earth-quake motions. Concentrically braced frames (CBFs) can be used for earthquake resistance due to their good ductility. The study observed that local buckling can cause reductions in compressive capacity of the brace and cause fracture in tension. The study also observed that connection restraint at brace ends can affect brace stiffness, strength, and fracture. The brace slenderness can be reduced by adopting an X-bracing configuration. | - |
