존재와 일관성을 둘러싼 프레게/힐버트 논쟁

Abstract

프레게와 힐버트는 일관성 증명의 의의와 필요성에 대해 아주 다른 견해를 가졌다. 이 글의 목적은 프레게와 힐버트 사이의 견해차가 정확히 어떤 것이고, 그런 견해차가 발생하게 된 원인이 무엇인지를 밝히는 데 있다. 이를 위해 우선 나는 힐버트가 제시한 일관성 증명의 구조를 살펴볼 것이다. 이어 나는 힐버트의 일관성 증명에 대한 프레게의 비판을 면밀히 분석하고 정식화할 것이다. 이 과정에서 우리는 프레게가 힐버트와는 다른 일관성 개념을 지니고 있었음을 확인하게 될 것이다. 끝으로 나는 프레게가 힐버트의 일관성 증명을 받아들일 수 없었던 궁극적 원인을 프레게의 추론관에서 찾는 방안을 새로이 제안할 것이다.

Frege and Hilbert have expressed quite different views on the significance of the consistency proof. The aim of this paper is to discern what exactly their views were and what made them disagree. For this, I examine first Hilbert's consistency proof given in the Foundations of Geometry, and then try to pinpoint the cause of the disagreements. In so doing it will be shown that Frege and Hilbert had different concepts of consistency. Finally I suggest that what made Frege reluctant to accept Hilbert's consistency proof was his unique conception of inference.
