dc.description.abstractHarrison's compositions in 1960s' clearly show the elements of Korean music as most American composers in the 30s'-60s', specifically Californian residence, had been eagerly looking for non-Western materials of music to create a whole new sound. This study examines Nova Odo(1961-68) and Peace Piece 1(1968) among Harrison's works, to investigate how he utilized elements of Korean music in his works. In these pieces, he used Pak, mouth organ and Piri, Korean Pyung-jo scale, heterophonic and antiphonal textures with Korean ornaments in orchestral writing, and the melodic developmental technique pertinent to Korean music. Most importantly, the technique of the formation in Korean melody was well combined with Henry Cowell's melodicle technique in these pieces. In accordance with the statement, Harrison made earlier that “In the beginning was the melody,” melody was the foremost important elements in his music. The melodic treatment in Korean music had been one of the most influential factors in his entire musical world.-
