下第詩 硏究

Abstract

下第詩는 과거 시험에 실패한 뒤의 감회를 적은 시를 말한다. 지금껏 하제시에 대한 연구는 거의 이루어지지 않았다. 필자가 확인한 하제시는 총 180제 204수이다. 詩體로는 7언절구와 7언율시의 비중이 큼을 알 수 있었다. 또, 시기적으로는 조선 후기에 창작된 것이, 내용적으로는 타인을 위로하고 격려하는 시들이 많았다. 하제시의 주제 구현 양상은 다음과 같다. 먼저 과거 실패로 인한 세상과 자신에 대한 복잡한 감회들이 드러났다. 愁, 悲, 羞, 悔, 怨, 恨, 歎 등의 詩語가 빈번하게 사용되어 그들의 심경을 잘 대변해 준다. 다음으로 가족에 대한 미안함을 담았다. 자신의 실패와 성공에 대해 가족들은 연대 책임자가 된다. 그래서 실패로 인한 자신의 內傷을 스스로 치유하는 동시에 가족의 傷心도 어루만져야 했다. 또 낙방한 사람에 대한 격려와 위로를 표현했다. 본인의 하제에 대한 심정을 다룬 시보다 타인의 하제에 대한 위로와 격려를 담은 시들이 더 많다. 과거를 실패한 경험은 보편적인 체험이어서 타인의 실패도 진심으로 위로할 수 있었다. 끝으로 과거를 포기하며 갖게 되는 감회를 담아냈다. 廢科는 지난 시간에 대한 체념과 포기로 볼 수도 있지만 새로운 길에 대한 모색과 시도로도 해석이 가능하다. 무엇보다도 하제시에는 順命의 의식이 관류하고 있다. 순명이란 끝내 사람이나 상황은 믿을 수 없지만, 하늘은 자신의 편이 되어 주리라는 강렬한 믿음이다. 실패는 세상이나 타인에 대한 원망이나 분노를 불러일으키기에 충분하지만, 순명을 통해서 어려운 시간들을 지혜롭게 극복할 수 있었다. 본 연구를 시작으로 하제시에 대한 관심이 환기되기를 바라며, 韓中 하제시의 비교나 시대별 하제시의 차이, 급제시에 대한 연구 등 여러 문제들은 후속 연구에서 꾸준히 다루어지기를 희망해 본다.

Hajesi(下第詩) refers to the poems written on the theme of ‘failure in the civic examination.’ So far, little research has been done on these works: a total of 180 titles and 204 poems have been found. In terms of verse form, a large portion of Haje poems was composed in chireonjeolgu (七言絶句: 7-word, 4-phrase verse form) and chireonyulsi(七言律詩: 7-word verse with rhythm); in terms of dates, most of them were composed during the late Joseon era; in terms of content, a number of them were composed to comfort and encourage those who were discouraged because of the failure in the civic examination. The themes recurring in Hajesi are as follows: First, the complex feelings about the writer himself and the world, such as gloom (愁), grief(悲), shame(羞), remorse(悔), resentment(怨), regret(恨), and sighs(歎) are well described. In addition, the writer expressed his feelings toward their families, who had the similar emotional response to the failure in the civic examination, with a sense of solidarity. Therefore, the writer had to heal his own wounded heart and, at the same time, those of in his family members. He also expressed encouragement and consolation to others who failed, too. There are more poems containing consolation and encouragement to others in distress than to himself. Actually failure in the past civic examination was a common experience at the time, so the writer could sincerely comfort others. Finally, it captures the feeling of giving up the past. It can be seen as resignation and abandonment, but it can also be interpreted as seeking and attempting a new path. Most of all, the consciousness of obedience(順命) is permeating Hajae poems. Obedience is an intense belief that a person cannot trust people or circumstances, but Heaven will be on his side. Failure is enough to cause resentment or anger toward the world or others, but, in the end, through obedience, the writer could overcome difficult times wisely. It is hoped that further interest in Haje poems will be aroused starting with this study, and various researches such as the comparison between Korean and Chinese Haje poems, differences in Haje poems by era, and studies on the Geupje(及第) poems will be steadily addressed in follow-up studies.
