일제 통감부기 관습조사와 응답자의 계층 분석

Abstract

이 연구는 통감부기 일본인 조사관들에 의해서 기록된 ‘관습’의 성격을 한국인 응답자의 계층 분석을 통해서 파악하고자 하였다. 통감부기 관습조사사업은 단기간에 대한제국 사법부를 장악하고 각종 민사 분쟁을 처리할 민법을 제정하기 위하여 수행되었다. 당시 관습조사를 담당하였던 우메 겐지로는 인터뷰 방식으로 한국인들의 관습을 기록하였다. 관습조사에 응했던 한국인들은 약 2,405명이었고, 이들 중에서 관료, 하급실무관리, 지방행정 보조원, 지배계층(양반)이 다수를 차지하였다. 이러한 결과는 일본인들이 기록한 관습이 관제관습, 지배층의 관습일 가능성이 높다는 것을 보여준다.

The purpose of this study was to identify the customs recorded by Japanese judicial officers during the period of the Japanese colonial rule through the social class survey of Korean interviewee. Kenjiro Ume, who was in charge of customs investigation at the time, recorded the customs of Koreans in an interview manner. There were about 2,400 Koreans who responded to the custom survey, and among them, bureaucrats, low-level administrative officials, local administrative assistants, and ruling classes (yangban) accounted for the majority. These results show that the customs recorded by the Japanese are likely to be bureaucratic practices, the customs of the ruling class.
