Abstract

Atrium, which connects the inside and outside of space, is used as an element of public space that functions as a function of publicity. This is applied to modern offices and contributes to the improvement of a pleasant working environment and publicity of urban spaces. The scope of this study focuses on office buildings that apply atrium centering on Seoul. The research method examines modern business facilities, publicity, and atrium based on literature review. After that, an analysis frame is constructed to connect the atrium space characteristics and publicity evaluation elements in business facilities. The results of the case analysis are as follows. First, the open and free space of the atrium enhances the psychological accessibility of users to the space. This is because securing a pleasant environment and movement enables users" autonomous behavior. Second, the creation of open space through atrium creates a pleasant environment and smooth exchange for users, and promotes residence time and autonomy. Therefore, it can be expected to revitalize the publicity of work facilities. Third, the atrium plays a public role with complex functions as a symbolic space in the office building. This is to increase the efficiency of space and to realize the value of publicity rather than simply recognizing Atrium as a functional space.
