- Abstract
- Nowadays, more people often visit urban parks, as they enjoy improved well-being. The parks enhance citizens’ physical and emotional health, as well as the quality of leisure time. Hence the parks need to create a comfortable environment. For this goal, the universal design has to be reflected in public facilities in the parks. This article aims to introduce persistent issues and improvements of public facilities and encourage a long-term role as a community for the urban parks by evaluating the applicability of universal design. Target areas were three parks run directly by Seoul city hall, and target facilities were rest, sanitary, and travel facilities. The research was conducted with a checklist based on the four universal design principles (Adaptable, supportive, safety-oriented, accessible designs). Sanitary facilities earn the most scores, followed by travel and rest facilities. rest facilities are where people stay and relax the body and mind, the place is recommended to have a level floor with no cracks for an effortlessly access for everyone. Travel facilities should remove hazards from obstacles while walking and ensure safe walking. From a universal design perspective, rest facilities were lack of supportive and safety-oriented designs, and travel facilities were lack of supportive design. This article found how to adopt and evaluate the universal design in the field. It is important to have a long-term social agreement on adopting universal design on the public facilities contacted by various users.
