벤자민 브리튼과 나사의 회전 소리, 혹은‘해석’의 전회

Abstract

본 연구의 목적은 두 가지이다. 첫 번째는 헨리 제임스의 소설 『나사의 회전』 속 유령이 가정교사의 망상이라는 주장이 벤자민 브리튼의 오페라 《나사의 회전》에서 어디까지 유효한지 알아보는 것이다. 이를 위해 기존 연구와 분석을 재검토하고 이들이 어떻게 위의 주장을 뒷받침하는 근거로 해석될 수 있는지 알아본다. 본고의 두 번째 목적은 첫 번째 작업을 통해 드러나는 새로운 해석, 요컨대 관객이 경험하는 오페라 전체가 가정교사의 망상일 가능성을 탐구하는 것이다. 오페라 전반에 걸쳐 사용되는 음악이 가정교사의 주제에서 파생된다는 작업 가설을 제시하고, 해석과 분석의 상호연관성을 논의한다.

The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, it examines the “reality” of the ghosts in Henry James’s novella “The Turn of the Screw,” and tests the extent to which this reality is possible in Benjamin Britten’s opera The Turn of the Screw. Drawing on the work by well-known Britten scholars, this paper attempts to show the way in which their analyses can be interpreted to test the reality of the ghosts. Second, the present study tests a proposition that the entire opera is a projection of the Governess’s psyche. Based on a working hypothesis that the musical materials of the entire opera grow out of the Governess’s theme, this study discusses the relationship between analysis and interpretation.
