신화의 땅에서 분쟁의 땅으로: 코카서스의 중핵 ‘나고르노-카라바흐 (Nagorno-Karabakh)’에 대한 인문지리적 성찰

Abstract

본 연구는 2020년 9월 27일 발발한 ‘나고르노－카라바흐’ 지역을 둘러싼 아제르바이잔과 아르메니아간의 제2차 전쟁의 원인과 배경에 대한 성찰에서 출발하고 있다. 나고르노-카라바흐 지역에 내재되어 있던 불씨는 뿌리 깊은 역사적 연원을 지니고 있지만, 근본적으로는 사회주의 민족정책을 비롯한 스탈린 시대의 유산이라 할 수 있다. 본고에서는 분쟁의 중심이 될 수밖에 없었던 코카서스 지역의 인문 지리적 관점에 주목하며, 열강의 지배 법칙에 따라 피해국이 될 수밖에 없었다는 상황논리에서 벗어나 ‘나고르노-카라바흐’를 둘러싼 담론을 그들 내부의 시선과 목소리를 통해 듣고자 했다. ‘나고르노-카라바흐’ 전쟁으로 인해 오늘날 코카서스는 세계의 화약고 가운데 하나가 되었지만 실제 이 지역은 인류의 다양한 창조신화가 탄생한 곳이었으며, 그 문화유산에 대한 찬란한 기억과 재생이 오늘날 코카서스 국가들을 지탱하는 또 다른 힘의 원천이라는 점을 화두로 삼았다. 더불어 아르메니아와 아제르바이잔의 이익이 첨예하게 맞서게 된 이 ‘나고르노-카라바흐’ 지역에 대해 양국이 이곳을 자신들의 영토로 확정짓기 위해 고군분투하는 모습을 다양한 문헌과 예술작품을 통해 고찰하였다. 이를 통해 분쟁의 공간이 아닌 평화의 공간으로서의 코카서스 지역에 대한 기억을 소환하여, 다민족국가의 ‘공존’과 ‘상생’을 염원하는 작은 주춧돌을 놓고자 했다.

This study started by reflecting on the cause and background of the second war between Azerbaijan and Armenia surrounding the 'Nagorno-Karabakh' region that broke out on September 27, 2020. The seed of fire in the Nagorno-Karabakh region has deep-rooted historical origins, but it is fundamentally a legacy of the Stalin era and the socialist national policy. In this paper, we consider the human and geographical perspective of the Caucasus region, which was inevitably the center of the conflict. This study aims to listen to the internal voices and perspectives around 'Nagorno-Karabakh', moving away from situational logic that dictates that the country became victim to the rule of great powers. Due to the 'Nagorno-Karabakh' war, today's Caucasus has become one of the world's gunpowder magazines. However, we focus on the fact that this area was the birthplace of various creation myths of mankind, and the brilliant memory and reproduction of its cultural heritage supports the Caucasus countries today and is another source of power for the region. In addition, this papers studies various literatures and works of art that illustrate the struggle between the two countries to establish the 'Nagorno-Karabakh' region as theirs, as the interests of Armenia and Azerbaijan conflict sharply in this region. Through this process, this paper aims to recall the memory of the Caucasus region as a space of peace rather than a space of conflict, and a lay a small cornerstone for the 'coexistence' and 'co-prosperity' of multi-ethnic countries.
